About "Green Powers Forecast" app

About the idea

Since my teenage years, I have felt respect and responsibility for our planet. I always segregate garbage, limit usage of resources, and reduce to absolute minimum buying plastic things.

Sunset over the 4 wind turbines

Sometimes I ask myself if there is anything more I, as ordinary software developer, can do to help our planet? One summer, when I was travelling with my tent, I spent a night on a camping site near a big wind farm. While I was relishing this majestic view, a sudden insight came to me:

If there are no effective ways to store big amounts of cheap wind electricity that can be used in high-demand periods, the solution might be very simp–e - to do eveything the other way around:
just plan high demand for periods when there will be high generation of electricity from WIND!

Thus, the good forecasts of electricity generation from wind are needed! But it was a very long way from the idea to its realization, which took me and my friend 1.5 years and hundreds of hours of coding.

App details

Wind turbines big data and...

...forecasts computed by AI

There is a beta version of MVP (Minimum Viable Product) of our app currently available. We combined here Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms with the wind turbines locations data and weather forecasts to develop an app that forecast a generation of electricity from wind for 5 days ahead. For almost all European Union countries (in beta version limited to just Austria and Hungary).
All data used here come from the open sources (check at the bottom of the page).

5-day prediction of electricity production from wind...

...for almost all UE countries

Why is it so important?

Wind and sun, the most important renewable sources of energy, are non-steerable. It means we can't produce energy from wind and sun on demand, when electric power consumption is the biggest.

In periods with limited wind and sunlight, electric grids are under big pressure. Then the energy produced from natural gas or coal, which makes CO2 emissions, comes as a substitute.

Also, big batteries, used to store cheap green electricity, have still very small capacity, and their production is non-ecological.

No wind during high electricity demand means...

...increasing electricity production from fossil fuels, hence emitting CO2

What can be the solution for this problem?

Our idea is to plan in advance the peaks of electricity consumption with the peaks of its wind-based production.
It is very simple.

Our application provides a 5-days ahead forecast of energy generation from wind turbines. We can name it a “core-data provider” for both people (by map interface, e.g. for manual planning) and devices (by direct machine-2-machine REST API interface, e.g. for Internet of Things software).

Plan the electricity consumption based on our forecast...

...by analitical interfaces: map, charts, tables...

...or by machin-2-machine REST API interface

Examples?

You or your IoT software will know in advance that e.g. there will be a good wind conditions for today's afternoon in your country and a very high production of electricity from wind. It is subsequently possible at this period to:

By all of that you can make savings - both for environment and your wallet.

Sync with our forecast and when electricity is the greenest...

...charge your electric car

...heat your home by a heat-pump

...plan most electricity consuming processes

Team

We are a small team of 2 full-stack software developers with a passion for ecology, artificial intelligence and web-development. This application was built without any funding! This effort took our free time in the afternoons and evenings in 2023 and 2024, which resulted in more than 600 hours of work!

All this because we want to enable easier access to green and cheap energy for everyone in order to save our planet.

How it is done?

Our apps available here are divided into a few modules, both on back-end and front-end site. The back-end part (responsible for data management and AI/ML processing) is the biggest part and constitutes about 80% of code done for this project. What is visible here, on the web, is just an overlay for data processed in our back-end.

Everything is coded in the following technolgies: for back-end: Node.js (JavaScript), Python + PostgreSQl and PostGIS (as support Geographical Information System - to store and organize locations data). For front-end: JavaScript, Vuejs, Angular.

Wind turbines locations data is derived from Open Street Map.

Electric grid data is gathered from ENTSO-E
